FAQ

Rate my plating, answered

How is the plating score worked out?

An AI model looks at your photo and scores five things from 1 to 10: colour contrast, height, empty space, a clear focal point and a clean rim. Your overall score is simply the average of the five, to one decimal, so you can always see where it comes from. It is told to mark like a strict teacher: most home plates land between 4 and 7, and a 9 is restaurant work.

Is the score a chef's opinion?

No. It is an AI opinion, and AI models make mistakes. Use the two tips as ideas to try, not as a verdict. Our plating guides explain the principles behind each of the five parts with the research behind them.

What happens to my photo?

Your photo is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, to score it, and the score comes straight back to your browser. We do not save the photo. We keep the name of the dish and the score, to see how the tool is used, and a count of ratings per day against a one-way hash of your IP address so the free daily limit works without storing the address itself.

How do I get the badge?

Score 7.0 or more and the page gives you a small badge with your score, the dish and the month, plus the code to paste into your blog or site. The badge links back here. Its address carries a seal, so changing the score breaks the image.

Why is there a daily limit?

Each rating runs an AI model and costs real money, so the tool has a small daily budget for the whole site and one rating per visitor per day.
